One minute read… Veganism

My Dad sent me a text this weekend telling me to watch a Netflix documentary called What the Health… of course I looked it up online and saw the description:

What the Health is the groundbreaking follow-up film from the creators of the award winning documentary Cowspiracy. The film follows intrepid filmmaker Kip Andersen as he uncovers the secret to preventing and even reversing chronic diseases – and investigates why the nation’s leading health organizations don’t want us to know about it. With heart disease and cancer the leading causes of death in America, and diabetes at an all-time high, the film reveals possibly the largest health cover-up of our time. With the help of medical doctors, researchers, and consumer advocates, What the Health exposes the collusion and corruption in government and big business that is costing us trillions of healthcare dollars, and keeping us sick.

The kids went to bed early tonight so my husband and I watched it. Within 25 minutes I turned to him and said….. “Sooooo we are going vegan?” and he replied with a simple “yep!”.

I am floored by what I saw and heard.  I have watched a lot of documentaries like this in the past, and was a vegetarian for about 10 years due to them.  I also stay away from fast food, high fat or overly processed foods.  High Fructose Corn Syrup is not allowed in our house.  But I will admit, some of the things that I thought were OK to eat I am now finding out are TERRIBLE for you.  Chicken being one of the worst. The facts are unreal.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION REPORT HAS CLASSIFIED BACON & SAUSAGE AS CARCINOGENIC TO HUMANS

Aubrey, Allison. “Bad day for bacon: Processed Meats Cause Cancer WHO Says”. npr: the salt. Oct. 2015

“Carcinogenicity of consumption of red and processed meat”. The Lancet Oncology. Vol. 16. 2015

“IARC Monographs evaluate consumption of red meat and processed meat”. World Health Organization International Agency for Research on Cancer. PRESS RELEASE N.240. Oct. 2015

How have I never heard this before????  I don’t think I live under a rock. I watch the news. I don’t eat either of those foods anyway, but still! My daughter got bacon with her breakfast last weekend and now all I can think of is that my baby was basically chewing on a cigarette while I watched.

Obviously I am fired up about this… my family’s health is extremely important to me.  After watching we have decided that we are going to try a fully plant based diet this week to see how it goes! Wish us luck 🙂

If you watch it let me know what you think!!

    • Yes! My husband is surprisingly on board. Although I don’t know how you could watch the documentary and not at least take a break from animal products. Aadie doesn’t like meat or cow’s milk anyway…. so weaning her off cheese will be our biggest battle!
It is a definite eye opener!

      • Day 2 and we are going strong! I though my husband would have caved by now, but he is doing well and is surprised that he likes a lot of the foods/meals! I will definitely update!
As for the 2 year old… she has never liked meat for whatever reason, and she had a milk protein allergy as a baby so I’ve always had her on coconut milk. So far she has only asked for mac & cheese once and settled for a quinoa buddha bowl!
